Oscars 2014

Oscars 2014: 12 Years A Slave, Cate Blanchett, Matthew McConaughey win top honours

The historical 12 Years A Slave won top prize at the just-concluded Oscar awards but, in terms of sheer numbers, space was the final frontier. Gravity won seven of the 10 awards it was nominated for, including Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron who made Oscar history as the first Latino director to win.

12 Years A Slave won Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong'o who sent rival Jennifer Lawrence home Oscar-less. Kenyan-Mexican Lupita was one of eight first time nominees at the awards this year and has the even rarer distinction of winning her Oscar for her debut role.

Dallas Buyers Club stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto were expected winners of the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor awards. Cate Blanchett won Best Actress for Blue Jasmine, also unsurprisingly.

The Great Gatsby won the awards for Costume Design and Production Design. Frozen won Best Animated Feature Film and The Great Beauty from Italy won Best Foreign Language Film.

The biggest losers of the show were American Hustle, The Wolf Of Wall Street and Captain Phillips which didn't win a single of the 10, five and six awards they were nominated for.
