Sony announces it has sold 6 million PS4 consoles since launch

The Sony's PlayStation 4 gaming console has crossed the six million unit sales mark worldwide within four months of its since its launch.

"PS4 computer entertainment system has cumulatively sold through more than 6.0 million units globally as of March 2, 2014 (JST). This also includes the 370,000 units sold through in Japan since its launch on February 22," states Sony's press release.

Besides the rapid sales of the fourth-generation PlayStation console, Sony brags PlayStation software also crossed the 13 million sales mark via retail stores and digital downloads. It has been also understood that the PlayStation App has reached 3.6 million downloads by users.

Boasting further numbers and figures, the PlayStation official blog also adds "There have now been more than 3.6 million live broadcasts, and more than 56 million spectate sessions on PS4 through Twitch and Ustream. In fact, since January 1st, PS4 gamers account for 20% of daily broadcasters on Twitch. PS4 owners are also embracing the Share button on the DualShock 4 Wireless Controller, with more than 100 million shares captured as fans show friends their latest achievements on Facebook and Twitter."

The Sony PlayStation 4 console reached its native country, Japan, in February last week. The long-awaited Japanese launch came after a stellar debut in the United States and Europe, where more than 5.4 million units were shifted since November, offering a bright ray of hope to Sony after years of gloomy sales of its key consumer electronics goods.

Contributing factors to the high sales, apart from the brand and its ecosystem's attractiveness, include price and availability. As compared to its rival, the Microsoft Xbox One, the PS4 console is priced at $400, which is $100 less than the Microsoft device. The availability of Sony PlayStation 4 is also wider than its rival, as the PS4 is currently available in 53 countries and territories, while Xbox One is currently available in 13 countries only.
